Each book also contains a small original painting on a hand-stamped library card. The card is in a pocket on the inside of the back cover.

Mother Tongue Tied is a collection of words translated through my own invented pictographic language. Using an alphabet where each letter corresponds to a personally significant symbol, the images on these pages spell out words and phrases that are, for me, charged in some way. By distorting the relationships between words and their meanings, this book finds new ways of interacting with difficult experiences, and uses playfulness and abstraction to tackle discomfort. The idea behind Mother Tongue Tied also inspired the series Vorschriften, an ongoing collaborative project which includes others’ alphabets besides mine.

A portion of the proceeds from each book sale will be donated to Planned Parenthood.
